Catherine, this made me actually lol! I’m here because I want more and deeper than is offered to me via social media. There is so much great content out here that it’s almost overwhelming, but I’m really enjoying not only the writing that I’m finding on substack, but also the community. I’m always thrilled when someone I already like and respect shows up with an account I can follow. Looking forward to more from you!

Thank you! I feel the same way about social media but navigating Substack is daunting and I’m not sure what people will be expecting from me. I want to write about more than books. My head is awfully crowded. 😉

That picture is a fairly accurate one. My grandmother made the best homemade fudge sauce and they must have left me alone in the kitchen for a minute. I cannot resist chocolate.

I look forward to getting to know each other better here! ☺️

Thank you! You’re so kind. I’m in the same place. Social media doesn’t make me feel good. At the same time, I still don’t understand all the ins and outs of Substack- like how often to post etc. Sigh.

I’m happy to see you here!

Such a delightful writing style. If I need to label it … I’d say kitschy. Can’t wait to see how your musings evolve. And while I’m not as articulate as you are, I share many of the same thoughts.

Thank you! Hopefully, there will be evolving and not just the addled outpourings of my crowded brain.

I followed you here from Sarah’s Bookshelves Live. I enjoy listening to your thoughts on books and I also like reading many of the books you enjoy. Glad you are here!

I love hearing you on the podcast (especially from behind the paywall when it’s, shall we say, less scripted?), so I’m incredibly anxious to hear from you more here! I’m a Substack reader, not a writer at this point, and I’m anxious to see where this goes for you!

It could head straight into a wall. I still don’t quite get how Substack works!

It’s going to be the kind of things (weird) that don’t make it into the podcast or my blog. ☺️

Good luck with your new venture! I’ve been enjoying your commentary on Sarah’s Bookshelves podcast for quite some time and look forward to what you might have to say on Substack. Plus, I’ll love having the opportunity to communicate with you here, which just doesn’t seem as easy on a podcast.

Hello! You’re right about the communications, but be patient, my brain is slower than I’d like it to be. 😊

So I joined a few months ago based on the recommendation of Rhiannon ( remember her from She Reads?) and at first i felt it was like an upgraded Twitter ( back when Twitter was 140 characters) but it’s def bigger than that.

Still trying to find my footing here

I’m so happy you’re here! I’m hoping to treat it like an updated blog and not social media. I miss the days when we shared our love of reading that way.

I am still clueless about the ins and outs!

I'm new to Substack but looking to build a community of readers that is reminiscent of the early 2000s book blogger community. I prefer writing content over video and decided to give Substack a try. Looking forward to reading your posts.

How funny—I’m on a podcast and we were talking about our blogging days and I said I felt more community then than I do now with Instagram. I can’t quite quantify, but it’s real for me.

Hopefully, we can find some great reading from each other!

I love your reviews when you are on Sarah’s Bookshelves. As an older person, I am always looking for people my age doing book media to support and relate to! I am still not sold on Substack as some of the functionality seems clunky to me - but I have found some fantastic creators and I am happy to add you to my list!

So clunky!! I’m trying but feel like I’m going to bungle it by either posting too much or too little, writing too personally and not enough professional (i.e. pure reviews).

I’m on the lookout for accounts from mature women as well. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thank you! I agree- it’s not the most intuitive or visually appealing forum, but it’s the best alternative to social media.

And let’s hear it for older women! We rock. 😊

I love to listen to you and Susie on Sarah’s Bookshelves Live so thought would get more of you here. I started following some folks on Substack, but not thrilled with all the posts I see from folks wanting me to “Subscribe” even though I go to “Following”. I just need to figure things out here.

Catherine Gilmore's avatar

Agreed. As someone who wants to post and write I still have no idea how to make it work—how often to post, what kind of content. I’m sure I have big mistakes ahead of me, but I’m just going to write and be myself.

You will definitely get more of me here, but it may not just be books! 😊

I feel the same way! Not sure the best way to go about posting etc. I’m just feeling my way.

Thank you for supporting the podcast!

I was collecting old editions for a while a few years back, I have some versions from the 39s, 50s, and 70s! Fun to see the cover art evolve over the years

As a patron of SBL , your unique style is familiar and most delightful. You can turn up the snark and expand your musings on Substack. As a gal of a certain age( older than you) I too find distraction from the noise and distress of the daily news in Trader Joe’s 72% dark chocolate paired with a lovely wine and audio book . The simple pleasures of life.

Your written reviews along with your spoken reviews have added to my TBR . You truly have a way with words!

Thank you! 😊 Dark chocolate always works. we have a wonderful chocolate company here called Theos and they make a dark chocolate/almond/sea salt bar that is divine.

I’m probably going to be a bungler on Substack until I get a better grasp on how best to create.

Is Theos in Seattle? I live in Gig Harbor and occasionally up there. Substack could be your new “career”

Yes! They were originally in Fremont, but I think they were acquired. You can get their bars in QFC.
